Phytohormones, Rhizobium Mutants, and Nodulation in Legumes : III. Auxin Metabolism in Effective and Ineffective Pea Root Nodules.

High specific activity [(3)H]indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) was applied to the apical bud of intact pea (Pisum sativum L. cv Greenfeast) plants. Radioactivity was detected in all tissues after 24 hours. More radioactivity accumulated in the nodules than in the parent root on a fresh weight basis and more in effective (nitrogen-fixing) nodules than in ineffective nodules (which do not fix nitrogen)....

Phytohormones, Rhizobium mutants, and nodulation in legumes : v. Cytokinin metabolism in effective and ineffective pea root nodules.

[(3)H]Zeatin riboside was supplied to intact pea (Pisum sativum) plants either onto the leaves or onto the root nodules. When applied directly to nodules, approximately 70% of recovered radioactivity remained in the nodules, approximately 15% was detected in the root system, and 15% was in the shoot. However, when supplied to the leaves, little (3)H was transported, with approximately 0.05% of ...

Non-rhizobial nodulation in legumes

Legume Rhizobium associations are undoubtedly form the most important N2-fixing symbiosis and play a subtle role in contributing nitrogen and maintaining/improving soil fertility. A great diversity in the rhizobial species nodulating legumes has been recognized, which belongs to α subgroup of proteobacteria covering the genera, Rhizobium, Sinorhizobium (renamed as Ensifer), Mesorhizobium, Brady...

All nod genes of Rhizobium meliloti are involved in alfalfa nodulation by exo mutants.

Nodulation of alfalfa by exoB mutants of Rhizobium meliloti occurred without root hair curling or infection thread formation. nod exoB double mutants had the same nodulation deficiency as single nod mutants. Therefore, all the known nod genes are involved in nodule induction by exoB mutants, which apparently occurs via intercellular invasion.

Extended Region of Nodulation Genes in Rhizobium meliloti 1021. I. Phenotypes of Tn5 Insertion Mutants.

Rhizobium meliloti Nod(-) mutant WL131, a derivative of wild-type strain 102F51, was complemented by a clone bank of wild-type R. meliloti 1021 DNA, and clone pRmJT5 was recovered. Transfer of pRmJT5 conferred alfalfa nodulation on other Rhizobium species, indicating a role in host range determination for pRmJT5. Mutagenesis of pRmJT5 revealed several segments in which transposon insertion caus...
